What Is Tenax Solido?

A polyester mastic for bonding, filling and patching stone.

Tenax Solido is a polyester-based stone adhesive, produced by Tenax in Italy. It is what a fabricator reaches for to join one piece of stone to another, tighten a seam, pack a chip and fill the natural voids a slab sometimes arrives with.

There are two parts to it. Hardener is stirred through the mastic immediately before use, after which it cures chemically instead of drying out, and that is how it finishes hard enough to be sanded and polished flush with the surrounding stone.

Plenty of customers ask for it as Tenax Mastic, or just as Tenax plus a color. We hold black, white and transparent at our Laguna branch, and the choice of color carries more weight than most people assume.

Everything else on the care shelf treats a surface that is already finished. Solido is the odd one out: it is a material rather than a treatment, and its job is assembling the stone in the first place.

What Is Tenax Solido Used For?

Four jobs, and the workshop handles most of them.

Bonding stone to stone

Laminated edges are the usual case. Glue two thicknesses of 18 mm slab together and the profile reads as 36 mm, with Solido doing the holding. Mitred corners work on the same principle.

Closing seams

An L-shaped or U-shaped kitchen has to break somewhere, and the mastic packs and color-matches that join. It is the reason a well-made counter shows its seams up close and hides them from the doorway.

Filling chips

A chip at an edge or beside a cutout is packed, cured and sanded flush. Color runs the full thickness of quarried stone, so a filled chip disappears far better there than on a material with a printed pattern.

Filling natural voids

Small pits and fissures turn up in some slabs as a matter of course rather than as a defect. They are packed and polished during fabrication, which is why a finished counter looks more even than the raw slab did.

Clean and Dry the Faces

Dust, sealer and grease all stand in the way of a bond. Clean the faces being joined, let them dry right through, and hold off sealing a repair until the fill has cured.

Catalyse Only What You Can Place

Stir hardener into a small quantity and mix it thoroughly. Curing begins the instant it is catalysed, so work in batches you can place inside the working time rather than making up the whole job at once.

Pack It Proud, Then Sand Flush

Fill slightly above the surrounding surface, let it cure right out, then sand and polish level. A flush fill leaves a dip once it shrinks, and a dip catches the eye far more than a slight color mismatch does.

Can You Repair a Chip Yourself?

Yes. Small ones, given patience.

Yes. A small chip at an edge or beside a sink is well within reach of a careful homeowner. Clean it out, mix a little mastic in the nearest color, pack it proud, let it cure and then sand and polish it back.

Hang on to the fragment if you still have it. A piece that has come away cleanly can sometimes be glued back rather than filled, and a rebonded fragment matches perfectly for the simple reason that it is the same stone.

Scale is the honest limit. A chip the size of a fingernail is a home job. A broken corner, a cracked slab or damage around a cutout belongs to a fabricator, and having a go yourself usually makes the professional repair harder.

Will the Repair Be Invisible?

No. Close, on the right stone, from the right distance.

No. What a fill amounts to is a color-matched patch of resin sitting in a piece of quarried stone. Standing over a busy granite you will not find it. Under a downlight at close range on a plain surface, you will.

Busy stone hides a repair best. A coarse mottle such as Salt and Pepper or Tiger Orange breaks a fill up completely. A near-plain surface like Absolute Black gives it nowhere to hide.

Veined stone is the awkward case. Filling a chip that crosses a vein means matching the ground and the vein together, and the mastic comes in three colors rather than an endless range. Expect a compromise.

Set the expectation before you begin. Ninety percent invisible is a good result on quarried stone, and a great deal better than living with the chip.

Which Color Should You Choose?

Match the ground, not the pattern.

Choose against the dominant background color of the slab rather than against a vein or a fleck. The ground is what the eye actually reads on a grained stone, and matching a black fleck on a white granite leaves you with a dark dot.

Black goes with the dark granites, so Absolute Black, Black Galaxy, Tan Brown and the darker Sapphire quartz. White goes with the pale whites and greys, Caesar White, Moonstone and the Calacatta quartz designs among them.

For the warm neutrals, meaning Marigold, Beige Porrino and Crema Marfil, ask the Sta. Rosa branch which of the three sits best against your slab.

Transparent is for seams on veined or translucent stone, where any solid color would draw a line across it. It is the hardest of the three to use well, because it borrows the color of whatever lies behind it, so try it on an offcut first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tenax Solido the same as Tenax Mastic?
Yes. Customers ask for it as Tenax Mastic, Tenax White, Tenax Black, or simply Tenax and a color. It is one polyester stone adhesive, held in black, white and transparent.

Which color should I buy for my counter?
Go by the dominant background color of the slab rather than a vein or a fleck. Black for the dark granites, white for pale whites and greys, transparent for seams on veined stone. Bring a photograph if you are unsure.

Can I fix a chip myself?
A small one, yes. Clean it out, mix a little mastic in the nearest color, pack it proud, cure, then sand and polish level. A broken corner, a crack or damage around a cutout is fabricator work.

Will the repair be invisible?

Can I use it on engineered quartz?
Yes, and fabricators do, for seams and edges. Repairs show more on a plain quartz design than on quarried stone, because there is no pattern to break the fill up and the color is perfectly uniform.

Do I seal before or after a repair?
After. Sealer across a repair area stops the mastic bonding properly. Fill first, let it cure right out, sand and polish, and then seal the whole surface.

How long does it take to cure?
Curing starts chemically the moment the hardener goes in, so working time is short and a full cure follows within hours. Mix batches you can place before it sets, and check the tin for current figures.
