What Is Tenax Hydrex?

A water-repellent sealer for cladding, flooring and stone that lives outdoors.

Tenax Hydrex is an impregnating water-repellent sealer for natural stone, produced by Tenax in Italy. Damp is its brief rather than grease, and that single distinction settles where it belongs.

It behaves the way Tenax Proseal does: the liquid travels into the pore structure and works from within, instead of curing into a skin on top. Nothing rests on the surface, so nothing lifts, thins out or hazes.

What separates them is the range of liquids each turns away. Hydrex covers water; Proseal covers water and oil together, and charges for the extra reach. On a wall or a pool deck, oil never enters the picture.

Reach for this one on cladding, flooring, facades, pool decks and shower walls. Counters and vanity tops, where cooking oil is in play, want Proseal instead. Both bottles sit on the care shelf at our Laguna branch.

Which Surfaces Need Hydrex?

Vertical, outdoors, and anywhere water is allowed to sit.

Cladding and stone flooring

Marble and onyx cladding makes the clearest case. Both drink liquid readily, both are supplied for walls and features rather than worktops, and Hydrex is the routine treatment on either. A porous granite laid as flooring takes it as well.

Pool decks and outdoor stone

Lanai counters and pool surrounds come up often enough across Southern Luzon, and granite holds its color in sunlight where engineered quartz will not. A pool deck in Salt and Pepper or Paradiso Light is Hydrex territory. Stone outside works harder, so retest it more often than an indoor floor.

Shower walls and onyx features

Onyx is soft and absorbs quickly, which is why we supply it for feature walls rather than counters. Honey Onyx and Multicolor Onyx both take Hydrex on a vertical surface.

What needs nothing at all

Every engineered quartz, because the resin binder leaves a sealer nothing to sink into. Among the granites, Absolute Black, Black Galaxy, Tan Brown and Marigold are tight enough to skip it. Marigold is a light brown and still needs nothing, so shade tells you nothing here. Check the stone by name.

How Do You Apply Tenax Hydrex?

Three steps, and walls call for the extra care.

Dry Stone First, Every Time

Nothing can travel into a pore that already holds water, and stone outdoors keeps damp longer than people expect. Wash it down with a pH-neutral stone cleaner, then leave it a dry day or two.

On Walls, Start Low and Climb

Running upward means a drip lands on stone you have already treated instead of streaking dry cladding underneath. Thin, even passes beat one heavy one.

Lift Off Every Trace of Excess

Anything still sitting on top when it dries sets into a cloudy patch, and across a large floor that is a punishing amount of area to put right. Keep a dry cloth following behind you, and open the windows.

Does Hydrex Change How the Stone Looks?

No, as long as you lift the excess off.

No. The sealer does its work below the surface and leaves behind no skin, no added gloss and no shift in tone. Treated cladding and untreated cladding are indistinguishable side by side.

Residue is the one thing that spoils that. Sealer left to dry on top rather than buffed away hardens into an uneven bloom, and stripping a whole floor back is a long afternoon. Work a section at a time.

If deepening the color is what you are actually after, that is a different bottle. Tenax Cera Fluida enriches tone and lays down a soft sheen, and it can go over a sealed surface.

Sealing also does not close a pit. Whether a slab is filled or left open is decided before it is laid, and Hydrex neither packs those voids nor alters how they read.

Does Hydrex Prevent Etching?

No, and on calcium carbonate that matters.

No. Sealing keeps liquid from being absorbed. It has no effect at all on acid biting chemically into the surface, and those are two unrelated kinds of damage.

A stain is color left behind by something that soaked in. An etch is a dull scar where acid has eaten the polish itself. Marble and onyx are calcium carbonate, so acid dulls them straight through a perfectly sound seal.

That is why we point the softer carbonate stones at floors, walls and features. A wall rarely meets vinegar or calamansi, so sealing genuinely does cover the everyday risk there. A worktop is another matter entirely.

Granite is a silicate rather than a carbonate, so it does not etch. Outdoors the thing to watch is not acid but how much faster sun and rain spend a seal.

Tenax Cera Fluida, also ₱3,500, deepens color and lays on a soft sheen. It rides on the surface and wears away, so it is a finish rather than a defence. Keep it off quartz, where wax turns yellow.

Solido is glue

Whenever the water test fails, and outdoors that comes round sooner.

Let Water Decide, Not the Calendar

Put a few drops on a spot nobody looks at, wait about fifteen minutes, then wipe. A darkened patch underneath means the seal has given up; water still standing in beads means it has not. Marble and onyx can reach that point inside six months, while a granite that needs sealing at all will often manage a year.

Check Outdoor Stone at Both Ends of the Rains

Sun, rain and footfall spend a seal faster than an indoor floor ever does. Test pool surrounds and facades as the rainy season opens and again once it has closed.

Test Where the Stone Works Hardest

The pool edge, the doorway, the foot of a wall that catches splash-back. Those spots give out first, and a floor can want attention there while the rest of it is still perfectly sound.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Hydrex different from Proseal?
Hydrex turns away water, at ₱3,500. Proseal turns away water and oil, at ₱4,600. Walls, floors, cladding and outdoor stone take Hydrex; a worktop, where cooking oil is the real threat, takes Proseal.

Can I put Hydrex on a kitchen countertop?
You can, and it is still the wrong bottle. Cooking oil will go straight past it into a porous stone, and oil is what marks a worktop. Put the extra ₱1,100 towards Proseal anywhere food is prepared.

Does marble cladding really need sealing?
Yes, and sooner than granite does. Marble takes up water, oil and anything carrying color, so an unsealed wall picks up marks quickly. On a hard-working surface, six months between coats is realistic.

Will sealing stop my marble etching?
No. Sealing prevents absorption; it does nothing about chemical attack. Acid still dulls marble and onyx through a flawless seal, which is why we steer those materials towards floors, walls and features rather than counters.

Does engineered quartz need sealing?
Never. The resin binder leaves a sealer nothing to sink into, so all it does is dry on top as a film. Quartz also belongs indoors, since UV turns it yellow permanently.

How do I seal a wall without streaking it?
Work upward so any drip lands on treated stone, keep every coat thin, and lift the excess before it sets. Streaking comes from residue drying in place, not from the product itself.

Does Hydrex fill the holes in porous stone?
No. Filling voids is settled before installation, with resin or grout, and sealing neither closes a pit nor changes how it reads. Hydrex protects the stone whichever way that decision went.
